Top Summer Activities in Surrounding Houston

It is no secret that summers in Houston are hot! Sometimes wanting to step out in the sun does not seem like a relaxing way to spend your time off. But, we have compiled a list of fun, yet refreshing ways to beat the summer heat here in Houston.

Schlitterbahn Waterpark:
The obvious first pick is Schlitterbahn Waterpark. This park is filled with water slides, lazy rivers and even private cabana rentals. Schlitterbahn Waterpark is made up of three different areas; Surfenburg, Wasserfest and Blastenhoff. Surfenburg includes attractions such as body surfing, high velocity water slides, lazy river and plenty of space to catch some sun. ­­­Wasserfest has activities such as a wave river, beach kids’ pools, white water rafting and waterslides. This area also has a 1,100 square foot hot tub, a kids’ area and a “shore line” sun bathing area. Blastenhoff is the largest of the three areas. Here you can rent cabanas to escape the heat, relax in an enormous hot tub with a swim up bar, high velocity water slides, as well as a kids’ area. Schlitterbahn also has several restaurants as well as a Dippin’ Dots. Admission is just over $65 a person and includes your admission, a custom towel and a souvenir bottle with refills of beverages. Museum District:
Want something educational and a way to beat the heat? Why not check out the museum district! With more than seven million annual visits, the Houston Museum District is one of the top cultural districts in the country. The Houston Museum District is made up of eighteen different institutions, 11 of which are free at all times. Some of the most popular museums include the Health Museum, Holocaust Museum, Museum of Fine Arts and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The Holocaust Museum offers free admission at all times. The Health Museum offers free admission on Thursdays between 2 and 5 pm, and Houston Museum of Natural Science offers free admission on Thursdays from 3-6 pm through the summer and 2-5pm during the winter. The Museum of Fine Arts offers free admission on Thursdays and well from 10 am-9pm. There is also several restaurants as well as shopping throughout the museum district.

Minute Maid Park:
Why not catch a ball game this summer. Home to the Houston Astros, Minute Maid Park is a fun way to enjoy America’s favorite past time. Depending on the night and game, you can find inexpensive tickets to catch a baseball game and eat a hotdog. Located in downtown Houston at Union Station, the park was built to reflect Houston’s historical relationship with the railroads and features a vintage, full-sized locomotive that runs on the left-field wall. Minute Maid Park offers a retractable roof as well as a classic atmosphere of red brick masonry and natural grass. You can also do walking tours for just over $10 a person. Catch a Concert:
Houston is a major stop for many popular tours. This summer, why not catch a concert live in one of hundreds of venues in Houston. Miller Outdoor Theater is a popular choice for many concert goers. It is home to most diverse season of professional entertainment of any performance venue in Houston. And it is all free!! Ballet, musical theatre, classic films, classical music and much more are included in the line ups. This area is located in Hermann Park and is close to the Houston Zoo. Seating is provided plus a large lawn that accommodates blankets and lawn chairs. Bayou Music Center is a great place to see big popular performers. Some performers like OneRepublic and comedians like Kevin James are headliners here. The Bayou Music Center is located in downtown near the Houston Aquarium.

Buffalo Bayou:
Last but definitely not least; Buffalo Bayou! This is a great family adventure in Houston. Buffalo Bayou officially starts just west of Katy about 35 miles from downtown Houston. Buffalo Bayou consists of a few streams that empty into the bayou. Buffalo Bayou winds its way through the dozens of new suburbs of South Katy and West Houston toward downtown. The Bayou continues through the Memorial area to the Houston Arboretum and Memorial Park, and the River Oaks area. The Buffalo Bayou offers a new angle on seeing downtown Houston. You can rent canoes and kayaks, hike or bike around the Bayou or take one of the five guided tours available. Buffalo Bayou is a great way to get adventurous in the city with your family.
