Top Fifteen Apps for Healthcare Professionals

Through a little research using iTunes and the Google Play Store, we came up with a list of helpful apps for healthcare professionals. Although some may be subjective based on the reviews, we thought these apps would be helpful and useful for healthcare professionals.
1.       Medscape
  • Medscape is one of the top downloaded medical apps amongst healthcare professionals. This app lists the most obscure diseases and is super comprehensive. This app also offers free CME’s to physicians. Medscape also provides medical news, references and continuing education resources.
  •  This app was the most downloaded free medical app of 2010 by Medical Professionals
2.       Microdex Drug Information
  • The app is described as “a free resources for on-the-go access to the industry’s most trusted clinical reference information, providing users the peace-of mind knowing the information is from Micromedex.”
3.       DocBook MD
  • DocBook MD is a HIPPA compliant way to look up and contact other medical professionals, including pharmacies. A Medical Society identification number is needed in order to use the application.
4.       Davis Mobile NCLEX-RN Med-Surge
  • Want to keep your brain fresh on your downtime? This app will give you questions to answer while you’re waiting for the bus or on break. This is also a great app for nursing students to use to study for boards.
5.       Sleep Sounds
  • Does working different shifts have your sleep cycle thrown off? Looking to relax on your break? Sleep Sounds allows you to play the soothing sounds of anything from a thunderstorm to a cat purring to help ease your mind.
6.       Symptomia
  • This is a medical diagnostic tool that is based on the needs of medical students and professionals. This app allows you to quickly access medical information based on the most common symptoms.
7.       The Color Atlast of Family Medicine
  • This is primarily a visual textbook of Family Medicine. This book has information and photographs of common and uncommon diseases collected by many contributors. It is mainly designed for educational purposes and is an easy to use textbook. Although it is an expensive app ($124), it is well worth the information that is within this app.
8.       iChart
  • This app allows you to keep track of patients through this personal medical assistant. This app allows you to store everything from a patient’s data to charts and lists of medications in a streamlined, organized fashion.
9.       In Case of Emergency
  • This app is targeted to nurses and doctors who don’t always work in a hospital setting. This app allows you to enter a patient’s emergency contact information. This is also a great app for anyone to have on their phone.
10.   New England Journal of Medicine
  • This app is listed as a “must have” for all health care professionals. This app allows you to access fantastic New England Journal of Medicine content customized for the mobile format. After downloading this app, you will have access to 7 days of published articles, along with images and videos of various medical conditions.
11.   MedPage Today
  • This award winning app is a great resource for medical professionals. MedPage Today puts breaking medical news and comprehensive reference information at the tip of your fingers. This app contains breaking medical news, free CME/CE credit, in depth, live conference coverage, Micromedex clinical reference information for Healthcare Professionals.
12.   AHRQ ePSS
  • The Electronic Preventative Services Selector is an application designed and developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. It was developed to assist primary care clinicians identify for screening, counseling, and preventative medication services that are appropriate for their patients. The ePSS information is based on the current recommendations of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and can be searched by specific patient characteristics, such as age, sex, and selected behavioral risk factors.

  • Pinterest is a tool to find your inspiration and share it with others. Use it to collect things you love, organize and plan important projects and more!   • This app delivers world class medical content directly from ReachMD, the leader in medical education and information for medical professionals. All of the programming is broadcast on their exclusive Sirius-XM satellite radio channel XM 167. This app provides quality peer-to-peer content available in 15-minute programs that cover a broad range of topics for healthcare professionals.
15.   MedCalc
  • MedCalc gives you easy access to complicated medical formulas, scores, scales and classifications. This app offers a large selection of relevant formulas, scores, scales and classifications that have detailed information and bibliographic references for each formula.
