Now that summer is in full swing, keeping the kids busy and
entertained could be a challenge and laying by the pool every day can get old!
We have put together a list of fun activities to keep you and your kids busy
all summer long!
Discovery Green:
There are so many events going on at Discovery Green all
year long. Check out the flea market or splash in the Gateway Fountains. Admission
to Discovery Green is free, and most of the events in the park are also free.
You are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets and even your dogs. Plan a
picnic here at discover green; but leave the glass containers, tables and pop
up tents at home. There are concessions available for purchase at The Lake
House Café. Check out their website for upcoming events happening all summer
long!
Houston Zoo:
The Houston Zoo has tons of fun activities for all ages.
From tigers to jellyfish, this 55 acres of animals and exhibits is sure to keep
the entire family engaged! Children under 2 are free, ages 2-11 are $10 and
Adults 12-64 are $14.
Children’s Museum of Houston:
Located in the Museum District, the Children’s Museum is
full of fun and adventure. This museum is jammed packed of fun activities for
children all summer long. Thursday evenings from 5-8 p.m. are free for the
family. Plan your next family outing or even birthday party at the Children’s
Museum of Houston!
Public Splash Pads:
It is no secret that Houston is hot! Keep cool all summer
long at one of 20 different (free!) splash pads or “spraygrounds.” These splash
pads offer fun interactive activities for children. Bring a picnic and lounge
in the shade while the kids splash and play. Check out the link below for a
location near you!
Downtown Aquarium:
With more than 200 species of aquatic life in 500,000
gallons of water, there is no doubt that your kids will be entertained and
educated! You can make this an all-day family affair with an underwater
adventure restaurant, tons of exhibits and rides! You can get an all-day
adventure pass, which includes unlimited rides and all-day access to exhibits
and Stingray Reef for just under $17.
Port of Houston Tour:
Sightseers aboard the M/V Sam Houston can enjoy passing
views of international cargo vessels and operations at the port’s Turning Basin
Terminal. The 95-ft. vessel holds up to 90 passengers and features
air-conditioned lounge seating as well as standing room outside on the boat’s
deck. This is a free tour and reservations on a first come, first-serve basis
care required at least 24 hours in advance. This is a spectacular waterborne
tour of one of the busiest ports in the world!
Miller Outdoor Theatre:
This remarkable facility offers free high-quality programs
that are unique in the US. It is the only proscenium theatre in the country
that offers an artistically excellent, culturally diverse eight month season of
performances totally free of charge to the public. This summer you can enjoy
performances like Disney’s High School Musical JR and the Amazing Spiderman.

Moody Gardens:
Enjoy a rare, up-close experience with free-roaming Saki
Monkeys, beautiful macaws and other endangered animals and plants at the all
new Rainforest Pyramid. Celebrate the mysteries of science at the Discovery
museum. Feel the white sand between your toes at Palm Beach where a summer
adventure and a lazy river await. Embark on a Colonel Paddlewheel Boat cruse or
a challenge at the Moody Gardens Golf Course. This family adventure surrounds
you in this little piece of paradise. You can purchase a full access – 2 day
pass for just over $60 a person.
Houston Center for Contemporary
Craft:
Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is a nonprofit arts
organization founded to advance education about the process, product and
history of craft. At Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, you will see the
full range of the creative process, from how an object is made to why the
artist decided to create something “just that way.” Houston Center for
Contemporary Craft showcases the best in contemporary craft in a welcoming
environment that invites you to stay for a while or drop in often. Admission is
free. Enjoy Hands-On Houston; a free, craft activity open house on the first
Saturday of every month. Each month, a teaching artist will teach participants
a new craft activity related to the current exhibition. Families and children
of all ages are welcome.
